⚡What is the interconnection process?
Interconnection involves connecting your solar power system to the local electricity grid. To do this, you must obtain Permission to Operate (PTO) from the utility company. This is the final approval required to activate and operate your solar system.
What is Permission to Operate (PTO)?
Permission to Operate (PTO) is the utility company’s final approval needed before you can activate your solar system. Once we receive an approved inspection of your solar installation from the county, our interconnection team will submit the PTO request along with all the necessary documentation to your local utility company.
How long does it take to get a PTO?
The approval for Permission to Operate (PTO) can vary from 2 weeks to more than 3 months, depending on the utility.
Some utilities require the customer's direct signing of PTO documents.
What is System Activation?
System activation occurs when your solar system is turned on and begins generating electricity. Once PTO is received, our team can remotely activate your solar system through the Monitoring Portal. If remote activation is not possible, we will contact you and guide you through the manual activation process.
After activation, it may take 2-3 days for solar production data to appear in your Monitoring Portal.
What Documents Are Required for Interconnection?
The following documents are typically needed for the interconnection process:
- Lease Agreement (required in some cases).
- Utility Company Application Form for Interconnection (specific to your local utility), also known as the Customer Agreement.
- Solar System Design and Specifications (including details of the equipment used).
- Inspection Approval Certificate (issued by the county after a local system inspection).
- PTO Request Form (submitted by Equity Solar).
- Umbrella Insurance (required for systems larger than 10kW AC in most cases).
Key Tips for a Smooth Interconnection Process
- Ensure Accurate Paperwork – Complete all required documentation correctly and submit it promptly. Missing or incorrect information can cause delays.
- Coordinate with the Utility Company – Familiarize yourself with your utility company’s specific interconnection requirements, as they may vary by region. Some utilities may have additional steps or paperwork.
- Schedule a Timely Inspection – Arrange your system inspection as soon as possible after installation to prevent delays in the PTO process.
- Prepare for Activation – Once PTO is granted, ensure your system is ready for activation. This may involve basic checks to confirm everything is functioning properly.
- Monitor the Process – Use the Enphase Enlighten Portal or your Tesla app to track your system’s performance and identify any errors or issues after activation.
